A practical browser-audio guide

Procedural ambience for browser games, without audio loops.

A short recording eventually announces its restart. A procedural field keeps changing while it plays, using the browser's own audio engine instead of a repeated sample.

Players learn the pattern, even when they cannot name it.

A seamless recording can still feel repetitive once the same swell, bird, hiss, or tonal change returns on schedule. Longer files delay recognition, but they also add more audio to ship.

For environmental beds, a small Web Audio system can take a different route: generate tone, filtered noise, and sparse motifs in real time, then let their timing and movement drift independently. There is no fixed timeline to reach the end of and restart.

REPETITION

Loops reveal their landmarks.

Recognizable events return in the same order, at the same interval.

MOVEMENT

Procedural layers keep drifting.

Slow modulation and varied motif timing make the field evolve without a recorded timeline.

CONTROL

Game events can start and stop it.

The field is JavaScript, so your existing UI or scene logic can control playback.

After export

Load one file. Start after a player gesture.

Browsers generally require a click or key press before audio begins. Put the exported field behind a sound button, title-screen action, or another interaction your game already has.

<script src="/audio/ambient-field.js"></script>

<button onclick="window.AmbientField.start()">
  Enter the marsh
</button>

Stop it on a scene change with window.AmbientField.stop(). The exported field uses the Web Audio API and does not fetch an audio loop or external library.

A good fit

Atmosphere that can stay alive.

Use procedural ambience for weather, machinery, rooms, landscapes, dream spaces, and other beds that benefit from variation more than exact playback.

Keep recorded audio when

  • You need dialogue, a fixed musical performance, or a specific real-world recording.
  • Exact timing and identical playback matter more than variation.
  • Your target environment does not support the Web Audio API.

Hear it before you buy
